How to Obtain a CDL in 2023

Obtaining a commercial driver’s license (CDL) whether that be a Class A, B, C Passenger or School Bus CDL  is a multi-step process that typically involves meeting certain eligibility requirements, passing knowledge and skills tests, passing the new Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) for the appropriate license that you are trying to acquire and paying any necessary fees. Here is an overview of the general steps to obtain a CDL in 2023:

  1. Complete and Pass Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) . These are the new rules put forth by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration or (FMCSA) to set minimum training requirements for new CDL and new CDL Endorsement holders ie; HazMat and Passenger and School Bus Endorsements
  2. Meet the eligibility requirements: To be eligible for a CDL, you must be at least 18 years old (21 for interstate driving) and have a valid driver’s license. You will also need to pass a DOT medical examination and meet any other requirements set by your state.
  3. Study for the knowledge test: You will need to pass a knowledge test to obtain a CDL. The test will cover information such as traffic laws, vehicle safety, and hazardous materials regulations. You can prepare for the test by studying the CDL manual and taking practice tests or online classes that do just that.
  4. Pass the knowledge test: You will need to take and pass the CDL knowledge test at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or other licensing agency.
  5. Pass a skills test: After passing the knowledge test, you will need to pass a skills test, which typically includes a pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving. The skills test will be given by a third-party tester or the state licensing agency.
  6. Pay fees and submit any necessary documentation: After passing the knowledge and skills tests, you will need to pay any necessary fees and submit any required documentation to the licensing agency. This may include proof of citizenship or residency, proof of insurance, and payment for the license.
  7. Obtain the Endorsements: Based on the type of vehicle or goods you plan to transport, you may also need to obtain additional endorsements. Such as HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials), doubles/triples, tanker and so on.

It’s important to note that the specific requirements and process for obtaining a CDL may vary depending on the state you are in, and you should consult the guidelines provided by your local licensing agency. For any questions feel free to reach out and we can help as well!
