This has been a common question amongst individuals this year wanting to get their HazMat Endorsement (HME). Weather you have have a CDL or are getting one for the first time anyone looking at getting their HazMat endorsement for the first time will have to take what’s called is Entry Level Driver Training or (ELDT) specifically the HazMat ELDT as a new step in order to get that specific endorsement on your CDL or CDL Permit.
In order to obtain a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement on your commercial driver’s license (CDL), you will need to follow these general steps:1
- Meet the eligibility requirements. To be eligible for a HAZMAT endorsement, you must be at least 21 years old and have a valid CDL or Commercial Leaners Permit (CLP).
- Complete your HazMat Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) theory portion.
- Pass a TSA background check. Before you can obtain a HAZMAT endorsement, you must pass a background check conducted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This will require you to submit fingerprints and personal information, such as your Social Security number, and pay a fee.
- Pass the Hazardous Materials knowledge test at your local DMV or equivalent state agency. You will need to pass a knowledge test on the regulations and handling of hazardous materials. You can study the HAZMAT section of the CDL manual and take practice tests to prepare for the test.
- Add the HAZMAT endorsement to your CDL. Once you have passed the TSA background check, knowledge test, and skills test, you can add the HAZMAT endorsement to your CDL by paying the necessary fees and submitting the required documentation to your state’s licensing agency.
Note that the process to obtain a HAZMAT endorsement may vary by state and you should consult the specific requirements of your state. It may also include recurrent training and testing in order to maintain the endorsement. Also, certain materials such as explosives require additional training and endorsement to be able to transport them.
